Build the display around foliage and form
Upright Goldcrest contrasts with lower heathers and the varied shapes in a dwarf conifer collection. Holly brings glossy leaves, while pieris adds evergreen foliage after its spring flowers and colourful new growth have passed. The mature leaves of Forest Flame are green, with red colour appearing on fresh growth.
Holly and Castlewellan Gold are also sold as hedge plants and can become substantial. If you use them in a seasonal display, plan where they will grow afterwards and allow enough root space while they are in pots.
Check the heather selection and soil
Our heather packs mix Calluna and Erica types, which flower in different seasons. Some may be in bloom during winter, while others flower later in the year. Ask about the current selection if winter flowers are essential to your planting plan.
Most heathers need acidic conditions, though some Erica tolerate more alkaline soil. Pieris also needs acidic soil or ericaceous compost. Match growing conditions before sharing a container, and leave space for each plant to spread.
Look after roots through colder weather
Choose containers with clear drainage holes and check that winter rain can escape. Evergreen foliage can still lose moisture in dry, windy weather, while pots close to a wall may receive little rain. Check the compost before watering rather than assuming that cold weather keeps every pot moist.
Plant into open ground when it is workable, avoiding frozen or waterlogged soil. Water at planting and keep checking the original rootball through establishment. Leave nursery labels with mixed plants so their individual care and growing space can be checked later.

Questions before you order
Will all these plants flower in winter?
Some are grown mainly for their evergreen leaves and shape. Heather flowering times depend on the species in the pack, so ask about the current selection if you want flowers during winter.
Can the plants stay in their nursery pots?
Nursery pots are the supplied containers. For a longer display, allow appropriate root space, drainage and watering, and plan to plant out or repot as the plants develop.
