Choosing a hedge usually starts with a few practical questions: which plant suits the ground, how much space will it need and how many should you order? The answers below explain sizes, root types and early care. If you need help with a particular product, call 0333 533 0162 with the name and your planting measurements.
Compare the plant and the complete order
Use the supplied height, root type, pot size and price unit together. A minimum order is a purchase requirement; it does not tell you how closely to plant. For a mixed collection, check the plant count and whether the varieties are individually named.
Prepare for the first growing season
New plants need attention while their roots spread into the surrounding soil. Prepare the planting strip, water thoroughly after planting and check moisture through dry spells. Keep grass and weeds clear so they do not compete with the young hedge.
Common questions
Which garden hedge should I choose?
Start with soil, exposure, available width and the height you can maintain. Laurel, Leylandii, holly and yew differ in leaf texture, speed and trimming needs. Use the choosing guide to compare them against your site.
Which hedges stay green in winter?
Laurel, holly, yew and the hedging conifers in our evergreen collection retain foliage through the year. They still shed and replace older leaves. Beech and hawthorn are deciduous, while privet leaf retention varies.
How many plants do I need?
Measure the usable planting length and choose spacing suited to the species, supplied size and planting arrangement. Do not use the minimum order quantity as a spacing rule. Ask if you need help checking a calculation.
Does a taller plant mean instant privacy?
A taller plant gives more height from the start, but gaps may remain between neighbouring plants. Branching, spacing and aftercare all affect how soon the hedge grows together.
What does P9 or a 9cm pot mean?
It describes a small nursery container, not the mature size of the plant. Compare the supplied height and other specifications too. Larger litre measurements describe the container volume.
Can potted plants be planted in any weather?
Potted plants offer flexibility, but do not plant into frozen or waterlogged ground. Very hot, dry conditions also make establishment more demanding. Prepare the site and have water available before planting.
Should every shrub get the same planting treatment?
No. Match products to the plant and follow the label. Standard Rootgrow, for example, is not the appropriate formulation for rhododendrons, azaleas or heathers.
Why is my plant not in flower when it arrives?
Flowering depends on the species, season and weather. Plants may arrive before or after their flowering period, even when the product photograph shows them in bloom.
How should I ask about a Price Match Guarantee?
